Preorder the Book — Now Live

Risk.
Responsibility.
The Return on Commitment.

A book about what the work is turning you into.
By Austin Dunbar.

Everything tells you to wait until you are ready. To wait for the sign, the certainty, the perfect moment. This book is about what happens when you stop waiting.

Before I ask you to back this book…

I want to tell you what it is first.

Building in the Black is a book about what the work is turning you into.

It is not a founder memoir. It is not a business playbook. It is not another productivity manual.

It is about the years that shape you while you are living them. The years spent inside decisions you cannot undo. The years where responsibility arrives long before certainty. The years that quietly become the person you are becoming.

WHAT YOU'LL CARRY WITH YOU

Six things this book hands you.

Not frameworks. No step-by-step systems. Just habits of thought for people already in the work.

01

Move Before You're Ready

Readiness is rarely something you find. More often, it is something you earn on the far side of the decision.

02

Build the Environments

The way you live, lead, and love shapes the people around you long after the work is finished.

03

Carry Without Burning Out

Endurance is not about pushing harder. It is about becoming someone capable of carrying more.

04

Don't Settle for Stability

Stability without giving up the part of yourself that still wants to build something honest.

05

Take Responsible Risk

Decisions that honor the people depending on you — not just the outcome you're hoping for.

06

Redefine the Return

The payoff is not only what you get. It is who you become. What you build quietly builds you.

Three Parts. Nineteen Chapters.
One Story.

The book moves through the three phases of every meaningful build — the choice to begin, the weight of carrying it, and the person the carrying is quietly making you.

Built as a structure, not a system.

I

Part One

Risk

The Choice

What it costs to move before you feel ready. The wager that starts everything — and the difference between reckless risk and the responsible kind.

II

Part Two

Responsibility

The Carrying

What the work asks of you once you are carrying it. Who you owe, what you steward, and how to lead the people who chose to build with you.

III

Part Three

Return

The Commitment

What you actually walk away with. Not the payoff you expected — the person you became on the way to it. This is the return on commitment.

Written for a specific kind of builder.

This book is not for everyone. And that's the point.

This book is for you if

  • You have started something and you are past the beginning but not yet where you are going.
  • You care about the craft as much as the outcome.
  • You are responsible for people, capital, or a promise you made to yourself.
  • You want to build the next chapter of your career on something more durable than momentum.
  • You are ready for a slow-burn story, not an overnight spark.

This book is not for you if

  • You are looking for shortcuts, life hacks, or a fast-cash playbook.
  • You want a hustle-harder manifesto instead of a slow-burn story.
  • You believe building is only about winning, not about who you become.
  • You are chasing an overnight-success spark instead of a life of work worth doing.
  • You are not ready to be honest with yourself about the cost.

The Author

I did not write Building in the Black as a business expert looking backward. I wrote it as a builder still in the work.

Austin Dunbar has spent more than a decade building brands, businesses, and belonging. As founder and CEO of Durham Studio, recognized as Kentucky's Best Design Studio, and co-founder of Wenzel Distillery, whose bourbons have earned World's Best and multiple Double Gold medals in various national spirit competitions, he's learned that what you build is only half the story. The harder work is becoming the person capable of carrying it. As a member of the Fast Company Executive Board, he continues to contribute to conversations on leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurship, but Building in the Black isn't a collection of business theories. It's a reflection on what building has taught him about risk, responsibility, family, and the environments that shape us.

Early Reader Responses

Notes from the readers who saw it first.

"

You had me at Day 0. Incredibly written, raw with emotion that kept me engaged and wanting more.

Beta Reader

"

"I've been an employed designer staring at a stable paycheck and sensing that the cost of stability was stagnation." This shit cuts deep, man.

Beta Reader

"

Highlighting and marking up — but it's good and heavy and impactful already. Can't wait to get the full book.

Beta Reader

"

The chapters you pulled are a lovely mix. The hole story and metaphor is nuts. Love the seed story with the Brian wisdom, and the last chapter is just repeated punches.

Beta Reader

"

This was honest, raw, and real. It showed that it's ok to not know it all. What you did know is you had pressure to perform — and you worked in the black to do just that.

Beta Reader

"

Love how you're connecting your personal experience to lessons learned. It feels like we're with you as you're seeing your past self in the thick of your trials and tribulations.
